Does international law still offer protection for the vulnerable, or is it becoming an "à-la-carte menu" for the powerful?
From human atrocities in Gaza and the legal battles at The Hague, to the United States’ forceful intervention in Venezuela, it feels like norms governing this world are being tested in ways we haven't seen in decades. If you’ve ever sat through a lecture and wondered, "How does international law apply to what's happening right now?" – this is the course for you.
At NCCU’s International College of Innovation, we are inviting you to join a brand new course, [Advanced International Law Seminar 進階國際法專題研究] this upcoming Spring semester.
This is a senior-level seminar designed for students who already have a handle on the basics of public international law, and is open for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students. Instead of a standard syllabus, the focus is on you and your independent research. You will pick a current debate or controversy that bugs you, interests you, or keeps you up at night, and spend the semester tearing it apart.
Why take this seminar?
Your Topic: You choose the research area. Whether it's mass atrocities, new technologies of warfare, or debates on sovereignty and statehood, you are the lead investigator.
The Real-World Context: You already know what the law is. We look at why the law works – and why it fails – in places like Myanmar, Ukraine, and Palestine.
Your Career: Some students study the world as it is. Others strive to change the world as it should be. Which one are you?
The ‘Inside Scoop’: You will be working with Associate Professor Kevin Chang, who has spent over 20 years with the United Nations and other international organisations in conflict zones like South Sudan, Ethiopia and Myanmar. He will show you where the law ends and where the reality begins.
