Feeling Political: Art as Public Sphere in the Cross-Strait Worlds 】
How can art function as a public sphere for political expression?
In the cross-strait context, the relationship between art and politics is undergoing dramatic transformation. The recent boom-and-bust cycle of museums in China reveals the entanglement between art institutions and the financial sector, as well as the shrinking space for public political expression. Meanwhile, artists and institutions in Taiwan are increasingly engaging with geopolitical tensions through their work.
本次講座中,謝一誼老師將從其新書《Flora and Fauna: Domestic Nature and Private Collecting in Reform Era Beijing》(2025)與展覽《Contested Waters》(2024–2025)出發,探討私人收藏如何成為另類的公共領域,以及藝術在兩岸政治語境中的多重角色。
Drawing on her recent book Flora and Fauna (2025) and the exhibition Contested Waters (2024–2025), Dr. Hsieh explores how private collecting emerges as an alternative public sphere, and how art navigates political possibilities across the Taiwan Strait.
It is both the worst of times and the best of times for political art.
