Program MissionThe International Program of Austronesian Studies (IPAS) is a multi-disciplinary study program designed to give students a broad foundational overview of issues and problems that are important to the great diversity of Austronesian people across the Pacific and of their relationships with each other and with other peoples – both indigenous and non-indigenous – living in the Pacific and the wider world.
You will learn about languages, material and intellectual cultures, the environment, law and policy making, as they are relevant to Austronesian peoples. This program is aimed at anybody who is interested in Austronesian cultures and cultures of the Pacific Area. We do welcome Indigenous students from Taiwan, Island South-East Asia or a Pacific nation, but also local and international students or professionals with a particular interest or involvement in Austronesian cultures.
The program will provide a broad knowledge base to people that plan to be involved in leadership, policy making, cultural decision making, and social or economic planning in Indigenous cultures across Island Southeast Asia and the Pacific. It is meant as a complement to an academic major, and will allow students to more successfully apply their academic or professional knowledge to Austronesian peoples and cultures.
[Qualification]
The program is open to all domestic and international graduate students, and to undergraduate students in their third and fourth year at National Chengchi University and at any university belonging to the the University System of Taiwan (National Central University, National Tsing Hua University, and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University). Individual courses may admit students at all academic levels under certain conditions.
