With Strong Foundations, Two Interdisciplinary Colleges Will Take Off

Interdisciplinary education holds its ultimate importance in NCCU’s campus policy.?With an eye to actualizing holistic education under the domain of humanities and social science, NCCU will establish two interdisciplinary colleges and the databases. College of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and College of Digital Humanities and Innovation will start student recruitment from the 107th academic year, and more interdisciplinary courses will be offered year by year. Upholding “innovation follows the integration,” NCCU strives to set a distinguished example in interdisciplinary studies.

?? ? According to President Edward Chow, the Course Refinement Project promoted since the 105th academic year has already laid a solid foundation for interdisciplinary studies, and the Flexible Teaching Project also facilitates students’ autonomous learning and interdisciplinary education. The Course Refinement Project not only ensures the class quality but also allows students to learn more diversely, basically, and solidly. Furthermore, the Flexible Teaching Project opens up 3 class hours for diverse learning, allowing students to be more devoted to internship, social practice, international mobility, and foreign language proficiency. Undoubtedly, students’ social awareness, critical thinking, and problem solving ability will be cultivated through internship, social engagement, and oversees experiences.

Both the establishment of The Program in Digital Content and Technologies and the Best VR Experience Award won by Professor Huang Hsin-chien’s “ La Camera Insabbiata” in the 74th?Venice International Film Festival epitomize NCCU’s recent excellence in interdisciplinary teaching and social engagement. Also, Huang Hsin, a student in The Program in Digital Content and Technologies, won the 2017 Hami Apps programming competition by his work “AORUS! GO.” It is rare for a student to win such honor in the competition.

? ? College of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and College of Digital Humanities and Innovation are going to take off. College of Innovation and Entrepreneurship aims to foster talents specializing in innovation, entrepreneurship, and creativity. The program features 3 courses modules, “Innova-bility,” “Technologi-ablity” and “Entrepreneur-abilty,” ?and the ?“mini program” it launches will release students form pressure of graduation credits. The students who are eager to innovate, keen to be a Maker, or aim to start an enterprise are encouraged to enroll in the college; they surely will encounter courses suited and beneficial. Moreover, College of Innovation and Entrepreneurship also blueprints a feedback circuit, which envisions that ?some alumni of the college will return to school and lead the junior to the world of entrepreneurship.?

? ? College of Digital Humanities and Innovation, on the other hand, emphasize students’ ability to synthesize humanities, aesthetics, and technology. The NCCU Creative Lab, which connected a lot of cultural events and industrial applications with the school, will incorporate into College of Digital Humanities and Innovation for their similar features. Based on thick knowledge of humanities and social sciences along with innovative teaching methods, the college will train interdisciplinary leaders who are able to solve social and economic questions in the real world through innovations.

? ? As President Chow emphasized, NCCU will have innovation follow integration. Regarding interdisciplinary resources, NCCU has strong foundations, such as interdisciplinary courses and programs, out-of-classroom learning, and teachers’ border crossing clubs. Interdisciplinary colleges will start student recruitment next academic year. 40 students will be admitted in the first year, and the number will increase by 25% each year. 6 courses are going to be offered in first year and from the second year 12 coerces categorized into 3 modules will be provided. 15 to 28 courses of the 3 modules will be run from the third year.
