The International College of Innovation (ICI) at National Chengchi University held its second graduation ceremony on June 7 at the International Building. The warm and moving ceremony brought together students, faculty, families, and friends to celebrate and send heartfelt wishes to the graduates embarking on their next journey.
Dean Tu Wen-Ling remarked that this year’s graduates began their college life during the COVID-19 pandemic, in an era marked by rapid change—generative AI, climate change, war, and migration. In response, ICI adjusted its pedagogical approach, developing courses that integrate Project-Based Learning (PBL) with data analytics to address real-world issues. From its early years to becoming a campus-wide event, InnoFest has grown into a testament to the talent and passion of this second cohort of graduates. Dean Tu also expressed his gratitude to the faculty and administrative team for their hard work in organizing InnoFest, the USR Joint Exhibition, and the graduation ceremony over the past week. He praised ICI’s success in integrating local and international students, and for cultivating a program environment rooted in global and local engagement.
Several faculty members also shared messages of congratulations and encouragement. Professor Shun-Nan Chiang reflected on his first year at ICI and his mutual growth with students, saying, “Caring for one another and building connections is the starting point of collective responsibility.” He encouraged students to carry this spirit forward.
Professor Owen H.T. Lu, in a warm and humorous tone, reminded graduates to cherish the “superpowers” they have cultivated over the past four years—whether in global governance, social and sustainability issues, or data analytics masters. “These are your tools to meet future challenges,” he said. He also jokingly added, “Breakup? Go to the gym. Stuck on a coding problem? Go to the gym!”—underscoring the importance of health above all.
Professor Kevin Chang emphasized that graduation represents not only academic achievement but also personal growth and potential. He encouraged students to become “bridge builders,” saying, “The future doesn’t belong to those who build walls—it belongs to those who build bridges, between knowledge and action, freedom and justice”.
Professor Michelle Kuo offered a series of interactive reflections that evoked memories of shared learning at ICI. She reminded graduates, “Your generosity, empathy, and social concern are the strengths this world needs most. Remember: You yourselves are the good news of this generation”.
Student representatives also shared their growth and deep emotional connection to ICI. Girard Mariano Lopez, from the Philippines, movingly said, “Our professors are like second parents, always understanding and guiding us through every challenge.” He added, “ICI taught me that politics and technology can and should go hand in hand. We must take this learning to serve the marginalized and pursue justice. Let’s be the change in this shifting world”.
Miyoshi Se, from Japan, recalled how difficult it was to adapt due to language barriers when she first arrived in Taiwan. She expressed gratitude to her friends and peers, saying, “ICI is my second home. If I could choose my university all over again, I would still choose ICI without hesitation”.
Jongsung Shin, from South Korea, spoke candidly and humorously about his journey from confusion to founding the SLAM club. He encouraged his classmates with, “If you think you might fail, add another try. Tiny chances grow each time you act. Action is the answer. Believe that one day it will click”.
The ceremony concluded with laughter, hugs, and joyful tears. ICI’s inclusive and diverse learning environment not only nurtures student growth, but also becomes an irreplaceable second home. This graduation ceremony was more than a farewell—it was a heartfelt tribute to four years of growing together, and a promise that the ICI spirit will live on as these graduates step onto the global stage to shine ever brighter.
