Lecture Topic:? Trade and Business Relations in Asia

Class taken by Dr. Mignonne Chan

Asian countries have not developed common philosophies to shape political economies of Asia. The lack of value system in Asian regional order such as Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) has led the absence of trust among members of the institution. Trust is very important in trade and business relations in Asia because Asian people only work with people they trust, This issue was raised by Dr. Mignonne Chan during her G2S2 lecture in the course of Political Economies of Asia on August 7, 2019. According to Dr. Chan, the value system is the most significant factors contributing to determine how Asian countries interact with the world. However, given the different values embraced by individual Asian countries, it would be more challenging for Asian countries to work together. This is also challenge for making regional connectivity under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) since this framework is not developed together by Asian countries. In national level, problem of different value system also appears when Taiwan wants to get rid China’s heritage from school books. This is not good for society. Therefore, Dr. Chan reminded us that “commonwealth of peace comes from respect of different civilizations.”
